World Design Capital Mexico City inaugurates this year agenda

World Design Capital is an official nomination awarded to cities which serve as model for other megacities in the fields of sustainability, creative economy, design, architecture, urbanization and identity. After a selection process in 2015, Mexico City was designated as World Design Capital 2018. This initiative, driven by Design Week Mexico along with the City Government, makes Mexico City the sixth city - and the first in the American continent - to obtain this title assigned every two years by the World Design Organization (WDO).

Why Mexico City? Over the last few years, Mexico City has demonstrated a passion and enthusiasm for design. New communication and security programmes, a bike sharing, urban gardens, parks and playgrounds were developed. Regeneration is taking place in the low-income areas around the city, which are transforming people’s lives through design.

For the Opening Ceremony, special guests as Zaha Hadid Architects, Studio Roosegaarde, Weiss/Manfredi, Coop Himmelblau, Ateliter Van Lieshout, Studio Libeskind, Gaetano Pesce, Coop Himmelblau, Rex, OMA, and Morphosis were invited to talk about the need of sustainable urbanization, smart cities and improvement of quality of life.

Stay tuned and discover all the events happening this year around the creative community and professionists of design.
