A museum that you can live in, coltivating emargin international talents and offering a home for the pioneers of the new espressive languages
To better understand the project FuturDome, which is the first space of XXX “museum housing”/housing musealeXXX dedicated to contemporary art, we asked a few questions to Atto Belloli Ardessi, its founder and artistic director, and to curator Ginevra Bria.
What is FuturDome and where and when was the idea conceived?
A:”FutureDome is the first project of museum housin/housing museale dedicated to contemporary art. It is a pilot experiment for the reclamation of architectural heritage, which unites conservative restoration, cutting-edge technological solutions and artistic interventions, connecting authors and businesses in a novel projectual path. Conceived by Isisuf - Istituto internazionale di studi sul futurismo (International Institute for Studies on Futurism) - the project FutureDome is a non-profit museum space located in a residential building. Through FuturDome, Isisuf offers a venue in which artists, curators and creatives can develop, realize and present ambitious projects to the public in a context that recognizes the role, the cultural and social value of artistic experimentation. The mission of FuturDome is to be of service to artists through an in-depth consideration of their path, through the the release of publications; as well as the introduction of their work in public contexts through exhibitions, projections, performances and educational programs.”
G: “ the original project, conceived by Atto Belloli Ardessi in 2004, hypothesized a museum located in residential environments created by artists and designers with site specific installations, in which it would be possible to live and experiment daily with artistic practice. Inaugurated while still under construction in 2016, FuturDome continues to become, increasingly, a liveable museum, cultivating international emerging talents and offering housing to pioneering thinkers of new expressive languages. It is a territory where contemporary art and disciplines become an XXXParte? art and parcel/part and parcel XXX of daily living, with the aim of being dedicated to novel projects in direct contact with a domestic atmosphere characterized by an historical imprint.”
Were you inspired by pre-existing realities of XXXhousing musealiXXX or is it the first of its kind? Is there a reason in the choice of a Liberty-style building?
A:” The term XXXhousing musealeXXX was created specifically to define the unique experience of FuturDome, which represents the last phase of a project of artistic regeneration. FuturDome interprets the XXX requalification/revitalizationXXX of a “Palazzo Liberty” (Liberty-style building) from 1913 through research on european avantguards interwoven with artistic and design site-specific projects located in domestic spaces. A thorough selection of emerging talents, XXXand consolidatedXXX, and of productive methodologies and of novel projects are the salient points of this venture. The idea to propose art in residential spaces is definitely not new. However the approach of FuturDome is based on the uniqueness of the environments that are purposefully in a transitional state, perfectly restored but left without finishes, raw, in order to emphasize the peculiarity and aesthetic qualities of the construction materials employed. Also XXX the architectural lines of the spaces XXX reflect the dimension of an environment that is a residential environment and not only an exhibition space, allowing authors to wrestle with a more everyday scale, closer to the final XXXconsumerXXX of the work of art. This allows the artist to confront environments that are more predominant that the usual White Cube of a gallery or a museum, focussing on the real strength of the proposed artwork, which is forced to enter in a dialogue and absorb the surrounding space. At first this can be interpreted as an obstacle. But after absorbing the spirit of the building and the camouflaging of the exhibition spaces, the non-neutrality of the environments amplifies the narrative strength of the work. An example are the rooms in the basement, painted in an acid green color (a peculiarity of the Knauf construction material used for humid environments), which have become one of sites favored by the artists to spatialize their works.”
G: “Formerly, this Liberty building was a place of gathering, of work and of debate for artists belonging to the Futurist movement. During the Forties, figures like Acquaviva, Belloli, Crali, Diulgheroff, Munari, Masnata, Regina and many others laid the path for other movements like XXX Poesia Concreta e Visuale, l’Arte Programmata e Cinetica/Concrete and Visual Poetry, Programmed and Cinetic ArtXXX. With the building upgrade, the aim was to reconceptualize the residential environment, extending art XXXconsumption/fruitionXXX also to communal spaces of the building. During the inauguration all the inhabitants of the building were involved in the exhibition process, a practice that can also be extended to the interior of private dwellings ”
How do you choose the artists?
A: “ The choice of artists and designers happens through inquires, research and studio visits, or through specific residencies that we offer to young talents to develop visionary projects, otherwise impossible to realize. Furthermore, beginning this year we have launched the FuturDome Prize, a prize for contemporary artistic disciplines to discover, recognize and sustain a future generation of creators. The Prize is a new international acknowledgment created for innovative minds that invest in the development of aesthetics and in the production of works that have a potentially revolutionary significance. XXXThe first time, this career price was given to XXX Gianni Pettena, an author that was able to subvert various artistic practices moving between architecture, design and Land Art, of which he is considered a pioneer.”
