The third edition of Swiss Design Map Milano lists all the Swiss activities during the design week.

Events like the Salone del Mobile and the Fuorisalone have long been an important showcase for Swiss design schools, firms and young designers. To increase their collective impact and visibility, the third edition of Swiss Design Map lists all the Swiss activities during the design week. This initiative promoted by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Milan allows visitors to take in the creativity, the innovation and the high quality of contemporary Swiss design at a glance.

The studio presents the project of the design of the map:
l’équipe [visuelle] was asked to create the design for the third edition of the “Swiss Design Map Milano”. Our work generally focuses on creating a visual-experience with a high degree of functionality. We like to put intense care into the details by not losing focus of the main picture. The graphical element of the “arrow” becomes an important element of the visual. It stands as a symbol for directions and forward-going and reappears in different areas of the design. To go along with that we selected a strong typography with serifs to break with previous editions. The colour red, in print neon-red, brings a relation to the Swiss-red in an unconventional way. The map itself is designed on a dark background. It is indented to surprise the observer while unfolding the map and to give a sense of “Milano by Night”.

Design Switzerland – Milano Fuorisalone 2019
Swiss Design takes center stage at Teatro Litta, the oldest theatre still in operation in Milan: the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia is pleased to show a selection of young innovative studios under the label Design Switzerland. In a site-specific scenography by Geneva-based bureau sasha von der potter, visitors are invited to step on stage and enter a narrative universe in which young Swiss design takes the lead. A flight simulator, a kinetic clock that follows the sun, a sensor for the elderly, a robotic arm in action, an emergency window solution and furniture parts produced by electric induction: all the projects on display push the boundaries of design innovation. Whether through their mode of production, the sustainable use of materials, the response to societal challenges or the questioning of their function, the projects presented on the Design Switzerland scene reflect a society and a market in the making.

Selected studios for the Design Switzerland exhibition: AATB, Valentin Dubois, Matthieu Girel, Douma Guittet, Xénia Lucie Laffely, Bertille Laguet, Birdly®, Studio 5, Studio Ilio, Studio Porto, Reto Togni / Instant Windows Project

The design schools FHNW Basel, HEAD Genève and ECAL Lausanne will again be present both at the Salone and Fuorisalone:

Institute of Industrial Design, Academy of Art and Design, FHNW in Basel presents at Ventura Future 2019: “Making of: Basel Edition”
“Making of: Basel Edition” is a visual relief mapping hybrid approaches towards diverse processes of making within the discipline of design at the Institute of Industrial Design, FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel. The artefacts tell the story behind the creation of this Basel Edition and reflect upon contemporary material culture.

Comprised of a series of different objects, the collection explores material development and new production modes on thresholds in between the unknown and the familiar, craft- and hand-production, the common and the unexpected. The selected handful of objects ranges from seemingly everyday objects such as a mocha pot or straw hat to a 3D-printed felt stool or whimsical ceramicware.

Doppia Firma
For the 2019 Salone del Mobile, the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship is proud to present the fourth annual Doppia Firma: A Dialogue Between Design and Artisanal Excellence, in collaboration with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte and Living – the Corriere della Sera magazine for interiors, design and lifestyle.

Doppia Firma 2019 brings together innovative designers and master artisans from around Europe to produce a unique collection of 19 works and small-scale series. Each object is the result of a creative exchange between a designer/artist and an artisan/ manufacturer – where project culture and expertise are cross-fertilised in an authentic expression of regional excellence.

This year’s event focuses on the international dialogue between creativity and fine craftsmanship. Several of the works were commissioned specifically for Doppia Firma, while others were sourced by the project’s partners, who searched Europe for creations that embody the spirit of Doppia Firma. In just three years, Doppia Firma has emerged as a methodology and a mark of excellence. Now in its fourth incarnation, this event shines a spotlight on those who boldly choose to pursue a less prominent form of art or who espouse an artisan-friendly project culture, producing unique pieces and small series never before displayed in Milan.

Designers include the Swiss atelier oï; Patricia Urquiola; Sam Baron; Emmanuel Babled. Artisans include: Bottega Ghianda; Nymphenburg; San Patrignano.

PLATFORME 10
In 2021, next to the Lausanne train station, PLATEFORME 10 will unite three museums, each with their own identities: the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (fine arts), the Musée de l’Elysée (photography) and the mudac (design), thus creating a new arts district of a surface of 25,000 m2 at the heart of the city. PLATEFORME 10’s mission will be to awaken and broaden the curiosity of all publics by offering them a space for discovery, exchange, learning, experimentation and wonderment, but also for leisure and contemplation.
