Pirelli 39: the new project by DS+R and Stefano Boeri Architetti in Milan

News, Milan — 28 January 2021

A total of 359 architecture, landscape/urban design and engineering firms from 15 countries took part in the call, launched by COIMA SGR on November 25, 2019.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) and Stefano Boeri Architetti are the winners of the competition announced on November 25, 2019 by COIMA SRG for the design of the complex of buildings in Milan at 39 Via Pirelli, in the center of the Porta Nuova area. The redevelopment project is part of the regeneration process of the entire neighborhood that started with Gioia 22, which will be completed in the coming years with the development of the Pirelli 35 and Gioia 20 projects.

The proposal presented by DS+R and Stefano Boeri foresees the recovery of the existing tower (the original destination for office spaces will be maintained) and of the bridge building on Melchiorre Gioia, but also the creation of a new tower. Stefano Boeri said: "Our project brings back to life a noble building (the former Pirellino), proposes a tower where Botany is intertwined with architecture and invents with the new Bridge/Serra a green space open to the whole city. In such a difficult period, this project relaunches in the world the vision of a Milan that bets on the future and faces with courage the great challenges of the climate crisis."

The bridge building, today perceived as a separating "wall" on via Melchiorre Gioia, will be emptied and made lighter, while retaining its architectural power. It will become a hub for the city: an open space dedicated to events, exhibitions, equipped with meeting and wellness areas, a laboratory on climate and environmental impact, and an extension of the Library of Trees. Central point of the transformation of the building will be the green house, a real greenhouse of biodiversity.

The new residential tower will stand on 1,700 square meters of vegetation, distributed on different floors so that the blooms transform the colors of the building with the changing seasons. This intervention will absorb 14 tons of Co2 and produce 9 tons of oxygen per year, giving the benefits of a forest of 10 thousand square meters. Thanks to photovoltaic panels, the tower will also be able to self-produce 65% of its energy needs, in the name of innovation and sustainability.
