nCaved, a house-cave by Mold Architects, in the wonderful landscape of the Cyclades Islands

News — 02 February 2021

A residential architecture, cleverly placed in the ground, that manages to be as one with nature.

On the Greek island of Serifos, nCaved by Mold Architects, is designed to be as one with the small rocky inlet on which it is located. The project is in fact a home-refuge, a place with a breathtaking view protected from the strong north winds, conceived as a volume embedded in the ground. The architecture does not stand on the line of the ground, but develops in its cavities, hiding from view and integrating perfectly with the landscape.

The project nCaved is based on a three-dimensional "chessboard" generating solids and voids, held together by longitudinal dry-stone walls. In contrast, the transverse façades aim for maximum lightness, made of glass and opening along their entire length, both on the front and the back of the house for maximum ventilation. A staircase, also carved into the rock, connects the three levels and leads to the main entrance in the large open space in the living room.

nCaved is in clear dialogue with nature, slowly revealing its peculiarities: if walking downhill you are amazed by the horizon and the sea, on the way up the eye is forced to wonder at the equally stunning blue sky of Cyclades.
